Payment fee rules
Add your gateway's rates so every order carries its real processing cost.
On this page
Fee rules estimate the processing fee of each order. If you connect Shopify Payments, PayPal or Stripe, their real fees replace the estimate. See Payment providers.
Open Costs → Payment fees.
Add a rule
Set a priority
Rules are checked top to bottom. The first active rule that matches the order is used.
Set the conditions
Gateways (matched when the order's gateway name contains the text), payment methods, card brands, countries and a minimum number of installments. Blank conditions match everything.
Set the fee
A percent of the charged amount plus a fixed fee per transaction. Or add tiers by charged amount instead.
Examples
| Rule | Conditions | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Card payments | Payment method: card | 2.9% + $0.30 |
| Installments | 3+ installments | 2.5% + $0.50 |
Tiers
Tiers replace the flat fee. The first tier whose "up to" covers the charged amount wins. Leave "up to" blank for the top tier; only one tier can be open-ended.
Store-wide fee settings
In Settings → Store & tax:
- Shopify third-party transaction fee %: what Shopify charges when you do not use Shopify Payments.
- Payment processing fees are returned when an order is refunded: turn on if your gateway refunds its fee.
Orders that match no rule use the gateway fee reported by Shopify, if there is one.
