Setup checklist

The setup steps that turn revenue into real profit, and the automatic setup option.

Updated 9 October 2026Open in Marginful

Setup walks you through each cost that changes your profit. Each step checks your data and links to the right setting. You can leave and come back at any time.

Set it up for me

Automatic setup reads your last 90 days of orders, products and payments. It then sets up product costs, payment fees, shipping, ad platforms, expenses and targets. It only fills gaps: anything you already set up is kept. Everything it adds is marked and can be undone in one click. Only owners and admins can run it.

The steps

  1. Connect Shopify

Read-only access to orders, products and inventory. Done at install.

  2. Configure tax

Check the VAT or sales tax rate, whether your storefront prices include tax, and how gift cards are recognised. Nothing is assumed for your country. See Taxes and VAT.

  3. Import COGS

Add what each product costs you. This is the biggest driver of profit. See Product costs.

  4. Configure shipping

Model what you pay carriers, even when the customer ships free. See Shipping rules.

  5. Configure payments

Gateway, installment and buy-now-pay-later fees per transaction. See Payment fees.

  6. Connect advertising

Connect your ad accounts so ad spend comes out of profit. See Ad platforms.

  7. Configure expenses

Payroll, rent and software reduce net profit. See Expenses.

  8. Review profit

Check the last 30 days: net revenue, COGS, net profit and net margin. Setup warns you when orders include products without a cost.

  9. Go live

Going live marks setup complete and starts alerts and scheduled reports.

Some industry packs add a step of their own, for example lens costs for optical stores.

Note

Only owners and admins can record setup progress. See Team and roles.
